Skagit River Steelead Spawner Surveys
North Sound TU currently conducts annual seasonal spawner surveys for late winter and spring wild steelhead on two key spawning tributaries of the middle Skagit River. We survey index reaches of Day and Finney Creeks, counting and documenting steelhead redds and any fish observed in the system. Surveys typically begin in early March and run through at least the end of May, with surveys taking place every 10-14 days depending on stream conditions.

In addition to the spawner surveys, North Sound TU has installed two remote temperature logging devices in both creeks to monitor fluctuations in water temperature throughout the day each season. Our goal with the surveys is to partner with other agencies to help assess wild winter steelhead abundance in the Skagit basin as well as to correlate stream temperature data with peak spawning activity and monitor for any shifts in run timing that occur over time.

The surveys are open to volunteers and we are currently looking for people with interest in assisting on the surveys through the March to May survey season.
